Gas Purchase – Finance Nerd Style

Hey guys,

I try to share tips and tricks to save you money and I thought it would be cool to use an example from a recent gas purchase about how to make your dollar go further.

A few weeks ago, I took a trip back home to see my family. It’s about a six hour trip by car – so I needed to fill up my gas tank to get there. I did my usual stop at a BP near my house before the trip, and spent $31.36 on a tank of gas.

Before making my purchased, I used my gas cash back and promo codes with the GetUpside app, that gave me a ton of additional cash back per gallon. I ended up getting $7.60 back on that trip. In addition, I also used a credit card that gave additional cash back on gas – my American Express Blue Cash Preferred card which gave me 3% cash back on a gas station purchase. (I was also working towards hitting the sign-up bonus on the card).

That netted me an additional 94 cents on my purchase for doing nothing. Then, after printing out my receipt at the pump, I used my receipt gauntlet strategy to upload receipts for additional cash back and earned another 20 cents from that receipt. I saved $8.74 on a $31 dollar purchase, not bad!

GetUpside has a lot of promo codes that you can stack on top of each other to get you a lot of cash back. As you can see from the picture below – I have already gotten over $40 in cash back from the app in just a few fills at the pump.

Feel free to use my referral link to get a sign up bonus of 15 cents back per gallon when you download the GetUpside app: https://upside.app.link/MF3D3

This may not seem like a lot of money back, but the little things add up over time. What small things to you do to make your dollar go further?
