It’s been a while since I posted, but I wanted to update you on my portfolio’s progress. If you’ve been following my blog so far, you know that I moved my investments into a Roth IRA portfolio constructed of individual stocks in early November of 2020.
My goal is to lock in a 1-year portfolio composed of stocks and REITs that both beat the market in capital appreciation and dividend gains. In analyzing my 2020 returns, for the last two months of 2020 my strategy worked pretty well.
Below you can see my calculations. For my portfolio, I have to take my dividend gains out of my overall performance for a fair comparison to the S&P.
- S&P 500 gain from November 3rd-December 31st 2020: +11.35% ((343.69 – 308.66) / 308.66 ) x 100
- My Portfolio gain from November 3rd-December 31st 2020: +14.11% (40,127.72 – 232.98) – 34,960.42)) / 34,960.42 x 100)
The results are pretty cool. I managed to beat the S&P index by about 3 percentage points in just under two months of my portfolio. Also, I’m not counting the dividend outperformance – my portfiolio yields just over 3% annually, about double that of the S&P. Much of that outperformance was thanks to my Moonshot Growth portfolio slice, which shot up close to 25 percentage points since the time I started investing to the end of the year (thanks Tesla!).
My portfolio is off to a great start in 2021 as well. I plan to update you on the performance so far in the next few weeks, but the sneak peek is: I already maxed out my 6k contribution for 2021 and doubled down on my strategy of not selling my preferred stock slices – I plan to hold until the end of 2021.
